The average U.S. wedding cake costs around $350, according to Thumbtack. What does it tell us? Well, apparently not much.
Because no matter how much we adore those beautiful pieces of confectionary art we see in Instagram pics, family photos, and window displays, the reality is sometimes different. Not all cakes are worthy of compliments. Some look barely edible. Others send the wrong message. And the rest… are something you wouldn't feed your dog.
This hilarious Facebook group is a safe place to share these sweet food monstrosities and it’s called “Cake Shaming.” Below we wrapped up some of the funniest examples people shared there, so enjoy!
No matter what the occasion, cakes have always been a staple of celebrations. From birthday cakes to wedding cakes, cakes have been enjoyed by people of all ages and cultures for centuries. From traditional favorites like chocolate cake and vanilla cake to modern creations like red velvet cake and rainbow cake, there’s something for everyone’s palate.
Cakes can be made from a variety of ingredients, from classic white, yellow, and devil’s food cake to fruit-flavored cake and gluten-free cake. Decorations for cakes range from simple frosting and sprinkles to more intricate fondant designs.
But we cannot ignore the fact that sometimes these sweet treats turn into devilish-looking monstrosities, as seen in various examples in this article. And you may not be surprised to hear that some of them were made like that on purpose. In fact, the ugly cake trend has been on quite the surge recently with people having fun by combining their baking skills with a smashing sense of humor.
At the epicenter of the ugly cake trend sits the holy grail of all the monstrous cakes known as the hedgehog cake. Previously, Bored Panda spoke with Lily Vanilli, a renowned cake designer and book author, who said it’s one of the big trends that she loved seeing emerge from the pandemic year. During the “lockdown was a huge uplift in people tackling more creative cakes at home and making weird and wonderful creations,” she told us some time ago.
But Lily warns that creating a hedgehog cake is not as easy as it looks. “It's more sculptural than traditional cake making.” Having said that, she doesn’t want to discourage anyone from making their own rules and style in baking since there’s no right or wrong way. Just trust your creativity!
If you’re eager to try your hand at creating a hedgehog cake, Lily’s advice is to start by getting the shape of the cake even when you’re carving the body. “Plus, making sure the buttercream and facial features are formed evenly helps a lot as well.”
“Then it's really just having lots of patience when you add the spines, so they're evenly spaced. Toasted almond flakes work well, or you could pipe them on with darker chocolate icing.”
