Food News: Bid on Beautiful Gray Treats at the Depressed Cake Shop - Houstonia Magazine

One of our 39 best new restaurants in Houston is shuttering. Decatur Bar & Pop-Up Factory, located at the old Beaver's space near Washington Avenue, will close for good after dinner service Oct. 31, per a press release. Owner Adam Brackman (Axelrad Beer Garden), who is a partner at the space, will market the property for lease, according to the announcement.

Decatur opened in January with a focus on cultivating food and beverage professionals. Part of its mission was to bring in a new chef-in-residence every few months to run the kitchen in her, his, or their own style. The first and only chef to lead at Decatur was Evelyn Garcia, a former Chopped champion who earned plaudits for her marriage of Southeast Asian and Mexican cooking. Garcia was already scheduled to leave Decatur to start her own concept, Kin, at the new Politan Row food hall. That will begin in November.

Along with Garcia, Victoria Elizondo used Decatur as an incubator by hosting "Taco Tuesday" nights. That success helped lead Elizondo to opening her own Politan Row concept called Cochinita & Co.

Before closing, Garcia and Elizondo will team up for a special menu Oct. 29, and Decatur will have a final party Oct. 31.

One of the biggest food and beverage events of the year will take place on Wednesday. Iron Sommelier, a competition and fundraiser to benefit the Periwinkle Foundation, is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Houstonian Hotel, Club and Spa. Competitors include Adele Corrigan of 13 Celsius, Chris Havens of Pappas Bros. Steakhouse, Chris Polodian of Camerata at Paulie's, Bridge Elizabeth Paliwoda of The Annie Café, and more. Tickets are $200 ($225 day of) and can still be purchased.

On Sunday, some of the top pastry chefs and bakers in town will contribute beautiful grey-colored baked goods for the annual Depressed Cake Shop event at Silver Street Studios. The event, in which attendees can bid on these treats (with all proceeds going to the Montrose Center and NAMI Greater Houston, providing behavioral health and prevention services to those in need), starts at 1 p.m. Look for offerings from 1751 Sea & Bar, The Dunlavy, Koffeteria, Nancy's Hustle, and more.

Broken Barrel in The Woodlands has redesigned its menu, which will be available starting in November. It now includes a larger selection of both large- and small-format dishes. Highlights include wagyu carpaccio, a made-to-order empanada trio, Mexican luau pork, fideo seco, and pastor duck.

Eugene's Gulf Coast Cuisine, the former Danton's Gulf Coast Seafood and Steaks that moved to the other side of Montrose, is adding lunch today. Quietly, the restaurant has been operating at 1985 Welch St. for the last month or so.

A new Toasted Yolk is on tap. The popular breakfast chain's newest location will be at 4601 Washington Ave., #130, and is scheduled to open in December.

For Dia de los Muertos, Arnaldo Richard's Picos is hosting a tequila class and tasting event that includes an Altos Tequila barrel. Appetizers will be paired. The event is from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 1 at Picos; tickets are $35.

Meantime, Cyclone Anaya's has three new cocktails to celebrate the day (and month), including a whiskey drink with blood-orange puree, agave nectar, sangria, and bitters, called El Diablo.

Finally, per Culture Map, Tasos Katsaounis of Bread Man Baking Company (you've absolutely had his bread around town) is opening a restaurant with Chico Ramirez (Field & Tides) and Scott Simonson and Stacy Crowe-Simonson (Cafe Nous). It'll be called White Elm Cafe Bakery, per the report, and will open in January 2020 at 14079 Memorial Drive.
