Buddy Valasto says, “My hands are my lifeline.” Now, he wonders if he’ll ever bake again.
According to a report by People, the ‘Cake Boss’ star faces a long recovery from a terrifying accident that has caused nerve, tendon, and muscle damage to his dominant right hand - putting his future in baking on the line.
How did it happen?
The report said that on Sept. 20, a malfunction with the pinsetter occurred while Valastro was bowling with his family on their in-home alley, causing a horrific accident.
“I’ve reset it a hundred times,” Valastro, 43, told People. This time, “I guess I looked away, and then my hand got pinned. The metal barb pushed right through the middle of my ring finger and my middle finger. I was stuck in a machine,” the report quoted.
According to the report, with the aid of pliers and a saw, Valastro’s eldest sons and his brother-in-law, Joe Faugno, were able to free him.
He’s resting at home in Montville, N.J. now, the report said, but has already undergone two surgeries, and may require more. His months-long recovery will require physical therapy, due to nerve, tendon and muscle damage in his dominant right hand.
Valastro said, ″It’s really preliminary right now, but they’re saying it’s definitely going to be a long road to recovery,″ the report quoted.
Will he return to creating the cakes that made him a household name?
The report said that Valastro’s ability to once again create the towering cakes at his famed Carlo’s Bakery, remains unclear.
“I have a thing with my hands. If I get a paper cut on my hand, I’m pissed off. My hands to me are my lifeline of everything I do,” he says. “And I wonder, ‘Am I ever going to do what I used to be able to do?’” the report quoted.
The report quoted Lisa, his wife, who has no doubt: “He will bake again, even if he has to use his left hand. Trust me.”
