District 3 Race Could be one of Sussex County's Most Expensive - WBOC TV 16

SUSSEX COUNTY, Del. - The race for the District 3 County Council seat is not over despite only candidates from one party running in the primary election. Patti Drago started a petition to get incumbent I.G. Burton to file as a write-in candidate after he lost his seat to Mark Schaeffer by 44 votes in the Republican primary. When Burton declined, Drago filed herself.

Schaeffer's primary election victory marked the start of Drago's campaign. She says she officially joined the race on September 21st at 3:45 p.m. Both candidates have the goal of improving the quality of life in District 3 and staying in touch with community. Drago, who is politically unaffiliated, says a big reason for her campaign is to give voters who weren't eligible to vote in the Republican primary a choice now.

Drago's ads explain how people can write her in, though the spelling isn't important as long as the voter's intent is clear. Her 8 day financial report shows her campaign has already spent more than $70,000. Schaeffer's 8-day report isn't available yet, but his 30-day primary report shows a total of $15,000.

"We've stayed on budget," Schaeffer says. "We've stayed within our means and we're out door knocking everyday."

"We have published small rack cards with information about me," Drago says. "Ads in the paper have helped. We've made a lot of use out of social media."

The two candidates have different campaign styles. Political analyst John Brady says this is an expensive race for Sussex County's history.

"Write-in candidates usually have a difficult time, especially trying to raise money," Brady says. "It's very rare that you see a write-in candidate that has political campaign commercials and revenues over $40,000."

Both Schaeffer and Drago plan to tackle the issues of traffic and land use.

"Transportation improvement districts, which were just instituted by the county yesterday, the second step in those," Schaeffer says. "Incremental bond financing, I proposed. We also need to protect our first responders and our police."

"When we develop land, when we develop specific parcels, we need to see what the impacts are," Drago says. "How do we stem the runoff from creating a further pollution."

Schaeffer has lived in Lewes for 18 years. Drago has lived there for 6 years, but says her experiences working in the property casualty insurance business and serving on the Lewes Byway Committee and her homeowners association make her a good candidate.

"With only six weeks to go we had to pull out the stops," Drago says.

While Drago makes the most of her short time frame, Schaeffer is sticking to the what he says was the plan before he had an opponent

"We have an obligation to go out and meet the voters," Schaeffer says.

John Brady also says it's possible the District 3 race won't have a winner until a few days after election night when the write-in votes are processed.
