decorating contest.
The chamber is calling all cake decorators to test their skills against others in a new contest, which is supported by Miss Myrt’s and scheduled to take place Saturday, March 27.
Participants will compete in student, adult, professional or amateur divisions in the contest.
Entrants may register ahead of time at the chamber of commerce, or the morning of the event at Miss Myrt’s.
The student divisions include Kindergarten-5th grade; 6th-8th grade; and 9th-12th grade. The entry fee for students is $5 for the first cake and $2.50 for additional cakes.
The adult division includes amateur or professional divisions, and the entry fee is $10 for the first cake, and $5 for additional cakes.
“We wanted to do an event that was community based and involved all age groups and that allowed the participants to showcase their talents and abilities. It is a fun event and one that will bring people out and to our downtown,” says Courtney King, the chamber’s interim director.
King says there will be a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place award per division along with a People’s Choice Award per division.
Rules for the contest are available at the chamber.
On Monday night, the Cairo City Council approved the Easter Egg Drop, scheduled for the day before Easter on Saturday, April 3, 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. at the Cairo Municipal Airport.
King says now that the event has been approved, planning will get underway for the annual springtime activity started by former mayor of Cairo, Booker Gainor.
