Argentina's top wines are increasing in price faster than the Bordeaux heavyweights, something collectors might want to consider.
Argentina's days as a source of bargain-basement wines might be over – at least at the top end of the price range.
Argentina's top-priced wines have enjoyed a substantial boost in their average prices since we last looked at them – and, granted, that was the best part of five years ago – but while prices have risen steadily, the value on offer is still excellent. And, in some cases, it's phenomenal.
Taking the wines on their own, it's hard to find any context for average price changes, so let's compare them to what is effectively the market standard: the five First Growths of Bordeaux. Taking the five most expensive Argentinian wines and comparing them to the First Growths is a fascinating exercise.
Over the past five years, the Bordeaux wines saw their global average bottle prices increase by between 9.1 percent (Château Latour) and 22 percent (Château Margaux) for a mean increase of 15.94 percent each. Argentina's top-flight wines had average price increases between 4.6 percent and 56.8 percent, for a mean increase of 34.72 percent – more than double.
Of course, there are many, many reasons why the two sets of wines are not really comparable – grape variety, provenance, global reputation – but, given that Bordeaux is the benchmark for global wine prices, the comparison exercise is valid.
While most of the wines on the list below are not necessarily cheap, they offer undoubted value, something Argentina has always done well. The wines on our list have an average aggregated critic score of 93.6 at an average price of $311.50. That's a bit like getting a bottle of DRC Echezeaux Grand Cru for around one-ninth of the price. And that Argentinian average figure is skewed by the top wine, which is more than twice as expensive as its nearest rival.
Meanwhile, at the bottom of the list are three wines with critic scores of 95-plus and yet their average prices are well below $300 a bottle. A 97-pointer with a global average price of $243 is value in anyone's book.

Zuccardi Finca Piedra Infinita Gravascal, Paraje Altamira | 97 | $243 | |
Zuccardi Finca Piedra Infinita Supercal, Paraje Altamira | 96 | $217 |
Looking back to when we last ran this list, there have been some big changes. Yes, the top three are still the same (albeit in a slightly different order) but the two lists have only one other wine in common (the Cobos Marchiori). The other is the grape varieties. Last time out half the wines on the list were straight Malbec, with the other half Bordeaux blends. This time out there are six Malbecs and only three blends – and there's even a Pinot Noir, which was unexpected.
Argentina built its reputation on solid, reliable wines that carried an attractively small price tag. But, these days it is so much more than simply a Malbec factory, churning out vast lakes of agreeable red wine; it has many more strings to its bow. And its premium wines reflect that, with a range of wine styles being produced at the upper end of the quality scale.
The fact that they also offer such amazing value is something we can all get behind.
