Greenville County School Board mulls new process for selecting books used in classrooms - Greenville Journal

Four books included in an AP English composition course are at the center of a Greenville County School Board discussion concerning whether the district should take a more collaborative approach to deciding which titles are included in classroom curriculums.

The books in question: “Dark Money,” by Jane Mayer; “The New Jim Crow,” by Michelle Alexander; “Nickel and Dimed,” by Barbara Ehrenreich; and “Talking to Strangers,” by Malcolm Gladwell came before the board on Oct. 26 as part of an appeals process used by students and parents to raise objections over curriculum decisions.

In this case, the books were among a list of titles students could choose for an assignment on analyzing and critiquing a selected book, as well as pointing out flaws and bias.

Ultimately, the board voted to allow the books to continue to be used, but the district hopes to adopt a new policy that would create a committee to review books for classroom applications that would be more of a districtwide collaborative effort.

The committee would consist of three teachers from around the district who would make the reading lists, and the materials chosen would be vetted by the academics department at the district office.

Burke Royster, Greenville County Schools superintendent, said that, though the list wasn’t collaborative enough, the district would rather avoid a more restrictive approach to selecting titles.

“We want to give teachers autonomy,” said Tim Waller, GCS director of media relations.

In other business:

  • The board certified its list of delegates for the South Carolina School Board Association.
  • They passed a motion to change the date resignations must be submitted from July 1 to June 1.
  • They adopted new courses in multiple subject areas that were previously unavailable at the honors level.
