Halloween Isn’t What It Used To Be - The Hudson Reporter

Dear Editor:

Halloween will soon be upon us!

Over the years, Halloween has become associated with trick-or-treating, jack-o’-lanterns, “ghost yarns,” the classic “scary movie” marathon on the tube, costume parties, and frightful entities that go “bump in the night.”

But, unfortunately, Halloween is not what it used to be!

The commercialism of Halloween has transformed a day that had been focused on “trick or treating” and “costume parties” to a profit-oriented “ghoul fest.”

Halloween has become the unofficial start of the Holiday shopping season. Strange as it may seem, Christmas decorations are already on sale in many shopping outlets.

However, Halloween doesn’t have to be about “ghost, ghouls, goblins, and greed. Halloween can be a time for doing a bit of good in – and for – the community.

Why not volunteer for a charitable cause?

Focusing our neighbors on doing good for the community will build camaraderie, solidify neighborhoods, and develop a sense of purpose and fulfillment.

Concerned citizens want to make a positive difference; they (we) want to contribute to the community in a meaningful way. This is especially true during these stressful times. Creating opportunities to do good nurtures an esprit de corps focused on compassion, commitment, care, and conviction.

To some, Halloween starts the “countdown” to the holiday season. The commercialism that is now associated with Halloween competes with those who want to work on projects to benefit the community. Many would rather go “Christmas shopping” than work on a community event.

However, for those who actually seize the opportunity, Halloween could be a time to benefit the entire community.
