Fort Gratiot resident Tanisha Bodeis has come a long way from making her kids’ birthday cakes.
She’s been baking on and off for around 15 years and it’s always been a dream of hers to open her own bakery, but it’s hard to imagine doing something like that when working two to three jobs with young kids.
But now she’s finally financially stable and was able to open Tanisha B’s Cake Galour earlier this month.
“Obviously the dream has come true,” she said.
Tanisha B’s Cake Galour opened at 3900 Pine Grove Ave., Suite 11, on Oct. 7 and offers cakes, cupcakes and tortes.
The bakery has already picked up some fans, including Fort Gratiot Community Development Coordinator Sharon Wilton.
She said one of the township’s staff members picked up cupcakes for the office and they were very tasty, with the vanilla cupcake Wilton’s favorite.
“The new bakery provides a one-stop option for residents looking for tasty and unique baked goods,” she said in an email.
Tanisha Bodeis first learned how to bake at a Sam’s Club bakery and then worked at Kmart’s bakery for around eight years before it closed. Throughout the years she’s gotten better and better, she said.
She and her husband, Mike Bodeis, had been looking for a bakery space when they found the Fort Gratiot spot, which was originally a bakery around 30 years ago and is about four minutes away from their home, Mike Bodeis said.
“We couldn’t have found a better location,” he said.

The couple invested between $20,000 and $25,000 renovating about 1,000 square feet since July. They knocked down walls, tore out the former kitchen, put in new appliances and painted.
Now it’s open with bright, warm colors and welcoming decorations. Along with the array of baked goods, of course.
“She makes wonderful, wonderful tortes,” Mike Bodeis said.
Tanisha Bodeis said she plans to keep the bakery “old school” to focus on style and keep the products simple for people. She believes in wearing hairnets and gloves and sells items pre-packaged.
Prices include cake slices for 99 cents, 12 cupcakes for $8.99, six cupcakes for $5.49 and four cupcakes for $2.99.
The bakery’s hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, with Tanisha Bodeis' lunch break from 1 to 1:30 p.m.
Working at the bakery doesn’t feel like a job to her and she loves knowing her baked goods will make someone happy. She wants to make orders exactly the way customers want, she said.
“Give us a chance, your cake will be done right each and every time the way you want it,” she said.
