BATAVIA — By day, Kirsten Currier-Rennicks juggles the responsibilities of being a wife and parent to two young children, household chores squashed between the chaos that is life with a few-month-old baby boy and a growing daughter, paying bills and ensuring everyone she cares about, and cares for, gets their fair share of love along the way.

But by night, Currier-Rennicks, Batavia born and raised, finds herself immersed in a world all her own — flour and eggs, sugar and cocoa powder, mixing bowls and measuring spoons aiding her as she continues on a path toward recovery and holds dear to her heart a proud truth — she’s now more than six years sober from drug and alcohol addiction.

“I have always been interested in cooking and baking since I was a child,” Currier-Rennicks, a 2018 Women in Business honoree, relayed via email around 2 a.m. Friday, when, for her, the work really begins. “I love creating things from scratch and getting positive feedback from family and friends, but I hadn’t really dove into the intricate decorating aspect until six and a half years ago when I began my journey of recovery from drug and alcohol addiction.”

“I was encouraged to find a healthy, sober activity to keep my hands and mind busy,” she continued. “Cake artistry has been, and continues to be, a wonderful creative outlet for me which has helped me to remain sober these past 6 plus years.”

Self-taught, with the help of a few Wilton classes taken a handful of years ago — the ones that helped her realize she could combine her love of baking and love of art into the single show-stopping and mouthwatering line of work that has customers very nearly knocking down her front door just so they can get a little nibble of the action — Currier-Rennicks is now the proprietor of KMC Custom Cakes, a three-year-old business “which marries a passion for indulgent home baked cake with creative, innovative design.”

“I do my best to use high-quality ingredients,” Currier-Rennicks said. “No box mixes here. When you purchase a custom-built home or a custom-designed website, you are being provided with something designed especially for you — custom baking is no different. I want to provide you with the best flavor and design possible.”

But, as with building a house or website, that takes time, she said, time and money — two obstacles made all the more difficult by the very nature of the beast that is baking.

“The hardest part of what I do is that my product is perishable,” Currier-Rennicks explained. “I need to complete my cakes as close to the time of the event (as possible) so that it arrives fresh. Often times that means not sleeping for a 48-hour stretch.”

Because, after all, Currier-Rennicks does far more than just bake cakes and pies. Each work she delivers is a masterpiece hand-tailored to look, and taste, just the way her clients had hoped, with the result more often than not exceeding expectations.

“(Kirsten’s) creations are an intricate part of many weddings and celebrations locally and beyond,” her mother, Lori Currier, said. “Her talents allowed her a creative outlet and built her self esteem, allowing her to become the amazing wife, mother and entrepreneur she is today.”

And the 44 clients who have rated her five stars out of five, calling her works “ beautiful, delicious and very reasonably priced,” on the KMC Custom Cakes Facebook page, would likely agree.

“I have only great things to say about KMC Custom Cakes,” wrote Alison Turoldo on July 2. “After sampling several different cake/cupcakes for our wedding, we decided to go with Kirsten because not only are her cakes delicious, and her displays beautiful, but she is truly a joy to work with. She listened to what we wanted and gave great suggestions. We absolutely loved our cake and cupcakes and received several compliments from our guests. She created a display for my theme (a combo of rustic and elegant) that was just what I had pictured and more. Her prices are reasonable and you most definitely will not be disappointed with what you get! We are so happy we found Kirsten.”

And so, no matter the hectic hours nor sleepless nights baking involves, Currier-Rennicks continues on.

“What I enjoy about baking is the pleasure and excitement that it gives to the person that I have made it for,” Currier-Rennicks said. “I love to make things that taste as good as they look.”

And while her biggest challenge remains finding the balance between the two halves of her busy life — “I am a wife and mother first, but want to provide my clients with not only the best cakes and desserts, but quality customer service,” Currier-Rennicks said. “I think that is a dying art.” — as she crafts rose-covered cupcakes, Lego-shaped birthday cakes, Thanksgiving pies and cookies for every occasion, receiving glowing reviews and nominations for awards like this along the way, she seems to be doing just fine.

“I was honored to be asked to be a part of your Women in Business,” Currier-Rennicks said. “As a person in recovery, I see the news headlines daily — drug addiction and the terrible fallout from it is everywhere. I am so grateful to be the other side of the story — people can and do recover from addiction and can be people who contribute positively to the community.”

Currier-Rennicks does not currently have a storefront bakery, working out of a separate licensed and certified kitchen in her home. Those interested in ordering a cake or other treat should reach out via her Facebook page or by calling (585) 310-2818.
