DELPHOS — McKenzie Snoke and her fiance, Cody Warnecke, are planning their June wedding. On Sunday, the couple attended a cake tasting event at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Delphos.

It gave couples a chance to sample the offerings from Baked to Perfection, a Delphos business that organized the event.

“I think it’s a good opportunity to be able to taste test before we buy what we want. I’m not good at decision making and I think this is good for something like that,” said Snoke, of Findlay.

Warneke was impressed with the event, which included music from a chamber group as well as several other businesses.

“I think it’s very nice — great selection in the orchestra and everything. It’s a very nice event,” said Warnecke, from Fort Jennings.

Baked to Perfection has been hosting the cake tasting for more than 15 years.

“It’s not really a bridal show. We don’t charge people to come in. It started 15 years ago as a way to let our brides that we’re going to be working for come in and sample every variety of cake and filling that we offer. So that way it just kind of helps them figure out what they want to serve at their wedding,” said Alex Benavidez, co-owner of Baked to Perfection.

So what trend is he seeing in wedding cakes?

“People always choose the general vanilla-chocolate but they always want to do something a little bit different. Red velvet is becoming very popular again. We in this part of the country do a lot of carrot cake — hummingbird cakes, also very popular another old fashioned kind of kind of along the line of a carrot cake but obviously a different flavor,” said Benavidez.

Getting the cake figured out is just one aspect of planning a wedding, with budgets varying widely.

“An average wedding, probably for us is anywhere within $300 average, probably. I mean, we’ve done some up to $1,000 if it’s a big wedding with lots and lots of cake. It depends on what they order,” said Benavidez.

With anything related to a wedding, planning ahead is a must.

“Normally, people book us about a year out. So a lot of the people that we’re having today, I’m going to say 75% of the people that we’re going to see today have already been in our books, the other 35% or whatever are going to be people who are just thinking about using us possibly this year or possibly next year even because you’re thinking about next year. We can do so many on a weekend so you know, if you don’t book us then we can’t do it,” Benavidez added.
