Recent years of above-average storm activity and worsening weather events continue to pose growing threats to the insurance industry.
The 2020 hurricane season begins next week (June 1), and early forecasts predict the Atlantic will experience 14–18 tropical storms this year, with 7–9 formations to reach hurricane-strength and 2–4 to become major hurricanes.
Before the season starts, homeowners and commercial policyholders would benefit from a review on the threats hurricanes pose and how to protect your family and your assets, particularly those in high flood-risk areas and coastal communities.
Looking back at the last 40 years of hurricanes and flood events, FEMA data published by the Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.) and Statista ranked the most expensive flood disasters in the United States from 1978 to 2019, based on National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) payouts for each event. Nearly all of the top 10 flood disasters on the list were hurricanes, and all 10 events occurred within the last 18 years.
In the slideshow above, discover the 10 most expensive U.S. flood events of the last four decades, ranked by NFIP payouts.
