California Uber ballot measure is the most expensive in US history - Washington Examiner

California’s ballot measure to allow companies like Uber and DoorDash to classify drivers as independent contractors rather than employees is the country's most expensive initiative ever.

The measure, Proposition 22, would partially repeal a new California law that classifies workers as employees instead of contractors. It would allow app-based drivers to remain as contractors. The initiative does not affect other types of workers.

A grand total exceeding $226 million was spent on this measure between groups who support and oppose it, according to the L.A. Times.

The lion’s share of this amount, $206 million, came from companies supporting the measure that rely on gig economy drivers, such as Uber and DoorDash.

Unions, such as the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and the Service Employees International Union, oppose the measure but spent much less, $20 million.

Despite the disparity in spending, the measure’s passage is unclear. Polling by UC Berkeley’s Institute of Governmental Studies found that 46% support the initiative. Passage requires a 51% margin of support.
