German immigrant partners with MN American Legion post and two bakeries to send cakes to troops - TwinCities.com-Pioneer Press

A Twin Cities cake and wine company, American Legion Post 57 and a Boston baker are teaming up for a mission to deliver cakes to troops overseas for the holidays.

The effort is being spearheaded by the nonprofit Rhineland Cake and Wine Co. in Minneapolis and founder Hiltrud Steimel. This is the second year of the program named “Operation Cakes for Troops 2020.”

The program allows family, friends and anyone interested to order a cake for U.S. troops living abroad during the holidays. Each cake costs $40 and includes a holiday greeting attached for every soldier.

Steimel, a German immigrant, chose the German “Gugelhupf” or “My Daughter’s Favorite Cake” for the holiday drive because the cakes can be shipped frozen to ensure freshness. Steimel’s grandmother passed the recipe down to her and it uses only all-natural ingredients.

“I came to America from Germany in the early 1960s. I was very homesick the first few holiday seasons,” said Steimel. “So, I can relate to how these soldiers will feel at the holidays when they’re away from home and family in a strange land.”

Edelweiss Patisserie, a Medford, Mass.-based baker, will be making the cakes and shipping them in the large quantities necessary. American Legion Post 57, located in Chaska, will assist in the eventual distribution of cakes to each soldier.

The program is expecting to ship at least 1,000 cakes this year, said American Legion Post 57 Commander Gary Vaneyll. Last year, they shipped 600 cakes.

The deadline to order a cake and have it shipped in time for the holidays is Dec. 3. Shipment is Dec. 10 and the cakes will arrive before Dec. 22.
