Cord-Cutting For Live TV Is More Expensive Than You Think - PCMag India

Live TV streaming prices are up more than 60% in the past five years.

It’s getting so bad that cable alternatives, including YouTube TV and fuboTV, “are starting to look more like cable clones,” according to CordCutting.com. The company tracked prices for all streaming services since 2015, which was the same year that Sling TV and PlayStation Vue became nationally available.

Unlike on-demand streaming prices, which have maintained low and stable points of entry, live TV streaming prices have gone up considerably. Sling TV’s cheapest plan, for example, went up by a third (from $20 to $30) since its debut. Playstation Vue wasn’t able to yield a steady profit with its $35-per-month entry plan, so Sony shut it down early this year

A one-month subscription to fuboTV costs $64 for the family plan, which is almost the same as YouTube TV’s price of $64.99 a month. YouTube TV underwent a few price hikes, although that didn’t stop the service from earning a PCMag Editor’s Choice award.

These high prices could be justified. CordCutting.com managing editor Stephen Lovely writes, “Live TV bundles have not exactly been offering the same product for more and more cash. They’ve also been reshaping bundles and adding channels. This makes price increases look more justified but also seems to undermine the very reason these services existed in the first place.”

The average entry-level live TV bundle went up by 35.7% since 2015. If prices from the upper tiers are factored in as well, the increase comes out to more than 60%. Live TV streaming is resembling cable more than ever, problems included.
