Not everyone can afford a new bike, but with a little love, used bikes can go to a new home. Volunteers like John Noviasky are fixing up hundreds of bikes.
"It's nice to have bikes that were, ya know, left outside and haven't been used," said Noviasky.
The Central New York family bike giveaway usually happens once a year but the group is gearing up for its second donation event. And with the pandemic people want healthy ways to get outside. They make lots of repairs from inflating the tires, to replacing seats, to scrubbing off all of that rust, all to make the bikes look like new for kids and parents.
"So this morning I said 'eh, I've got a little time today I'll throw in some time to help out'," said volunteer Randy Clark. "Why not do what you can."
This is Randy's first time volunteering, and he donated three old bikes his family wasn't using anymore.
"All we can do is hope the kids will enjoy them, and the adults," said Clark.
One thing they're still looking for is money to help with repairs.
"The price of our bicycle parts went up three times because most of these parts are coming out of China, and they're very scarce," said Jan Maloff with CNY Bicycle Giveaway Foundation.
The next giveaway is December 19 at 1 p.m. at the Dewitt Memorial Funeral Home in Syracuse.
