LISTING OF THE DAY
Location: Savannah, Georgia
Price: $3.3 million
Known locally as the “Wedding Cake Mansion” because of its fanciful exterior, this 1869 Second Empire Baroque home is in the heart of Savannah’s Landmark District.
“The special thing about this house is that it’s on Monterey Square, which is probably the most prestigious square in Savannah,” listing agent Staci Donegan said.
The house was built in the Federal style in 1869, she said. Circa 1890, it underwent a major renovation that changed the style to Second Empire Baroque.
This is when the ornate ironwork was added, along with a “pink Georgia marble raised stoop and a signature bay window with opulent stained glass,” Ms. Donegan said. It’s also when a fourth floor was added.

The ground-floor garden level now has a separate two-bedroom, two-bath apartment that the owner uses as a rental.
The parlor level, which is the main living level, is up one floor from the street. It holds the living and dining rooms, the kitchen, a powder room and a back porch.
The third floor has two bedrooms, including the primary suite, which has a sitting area. And there are three more bedrooms and three full bathrooms on the top level.
The property has three kitchens, plus an efficiency kitchen on the top fourth floor, Ms. Donegan said.

Other architectural details include heart pine floors, high ceilings, decorative plasterwork and rounded bay windows.
The original carriage house now holds a two-car garage and a one-bedroom, one-bath apartment that is also used as a rental.
When the owner bought the home in 2006, the house had been broken into seven separate apartments, Ms. Donegan said. “She received a preservation award for its restoration.”
Stats
With a total of 6,525 square feet, the property has a main house with five bedrooms, five full bathrooms and one partial bathroom; a ground-floor apartment with two bedrooms and two bathrooms; and a one-bedroom, one-bath apartment in the carriage house. The lot is 0.07 acres.

Neighborhood Notes
The mansion is “one block north of Forsyth Park, which is our little Central Park,” Ms. Donegan said, comparing it to the famous park in Manhattan.
“It’s just four homes from Bull Street, which is the epicenter of the Landmark District,” she said. “That’s where a lot of the shops and restaurants are.”
