The year's highest priced sales start at $20M
Though COVID-19 challenged almost every aspect of human life this year, San Francisco real estate remained very much a functional, thriving business. In fact, 2020 saw a year-over-year gain of 2% in the median sold home price, which now stands at $1,407,500.
S.F.'s five most expensive sales of the year are striking ones, with prices nearing $30 million for homes in Pacific Heights and Russian Hill. According to data provided by Team Hatvany at Compass in San Francisco, these two properties - one on Jackson and one on Lombard - were both off-market sales. Even without the pressure of market competition both closed at $27 million.
The latter property, 950 Lombard was poised to be one of 2018's most expensive homes, but didn't sell then. 2020, it seems, brought the appetite for such a home.
Maybe because "home" took on special meaning in 2020. Nina Hatvany, who as a listing and buyers agent took part in two of the top five sales we see here, told SFGATE that "in the midst of all the worry and concern about the pandemic, people focused on what they wanted out of life and a home. Many people executed on longstanding dreams of moving to the suburbs or back to their home state, or if they stayed within the city, to a house with more of the space and amenities that they wanted."
Such amenities include large yards, home basketball courts, pools, office spaces with ocean views - if folks have to stay home, they want their homes to be amazing. And if money isn't a problem, San Francisco has plenty of amazing properties.
