SUMMIT TWP., MI – Jackson-area firefighters were able to use an 8,000-square-foot mansion scheduled for demolition for training.

Firefighters from Jackson Fire Department and Summit Township Fire Department used the six-bedroom, seven-bathroom mansion in the 1600 block of Probert Road for a variety of training during the week of Nov. 30.

“It’s a tremendous asset to have a building like this to be able to go in and utilize and put holes in walls and demolish whatever skill set we’re working on that day and not have to worry about replacing it like we normally would in a training setting,” Summit Capt. Scott Stoker said. “Because this house is going to be demolished, we’re able to just go through and utilize every inch of the house.”

Firefighters used hand tools to pull drywall off wall studs, tear down ceilings and tear up flooring. They’ve also practiced stretching hoses and advancing hoses through the house.

They filled part of the house with a mineral oil smoke so they could practice searching for victims in zero visibility, something firefighter encounter at fires.

Jackson firefighter Tyler Whitehead was in his third day of training at the mansion on Friday. He said working on fire hose advancement techniques has been his favorite part. He said he’s also learned a lot from the other firefighters.

“A little bit of everything that our job encompasses,” Stoker said. “Everything we would do in a normal house fire.”

The training is especially beneficial to Jackson firefighters because they have seven new hires on staff, Chief David Wooden said. Seven command staff members will all retire by late spring 2021, he said.

This gives the department about eight months to get the rookies up to speed and senior staff experience at being officers.

“It’s going to be a lot of change quickly,” Wooden said.

For an upcoming training, the technical rescue team will start on the roof and cut holes in the ceiling of each floor until they reach the basement. Then they’ll search for a victim to rescue. They’ll also have the opportunity to go through bricks and blocks, something they can’t do in regular training.
