Crazy sweet: Check out the custom cakes at these 6 CT bakeries - Westport News

Add a little sweetness to your soirée with a cake designed just for you.

Connecticut is home to a number of bakeries, many of which design some out-of-this-world cake confections.

For anyone looking to pick up a cake that adds an extra splash of pizzazz or flavor to your function, consider checking out the cakes at these six bakeries and cottage food operators around the state.

Hardcore Sweet Bakery, Watertown

When it comes to thinking outside the box — or, in this case, outside the sheet cake — Jeremy and Nicole Braddock, the owners at Hardcore Sweet, have an idea or two about how you can have more than a standard vanilla cake to grace your table.

In recent years, Hardcore Sweet has competed in a number of televised baking competitions, including “Sugar Rush,” “Cake Wars,” “Sugar Showdown” and “Winner Cake All.”

“We are definitely not your typical run-of-the-mill bakery,” Jeremy Braddock said. “We are out-of-the-box, the crazier the better.”

Lovely Cakes, Stratford

Renata Papadopoulos, owner of Lovely Cakes in Stratford, has competed on “Cake Wars” and “Freak Show Cakes.” Her business specializes in creating custom celebration and wedding cakes that use all-natural ingredients. Lovely Cakes also specializes in creating 3D-sculpted cakes and hand-carved figurines.

“We cater to all occasions, but my personal favorite type of cake to work on is girly cakes with flowers, butterflies and lots of pink,” Papadopoulos said.

Crazy Confections, Stamford

Andrena Forlenzo owns Crazy Confections, a cottage food operator that creates colorful cakes, cookies, cupcakes and cakepops.

Growing up, Forlenzo aspired to become an artist, but said she was advised to follow a different path and became a school counselor. But the baker continued to pursue her artistic interests; she opened Crazy Confections, where she creates her designs primarily with buttercream and fondant, in 2019.

“I love creating buttercream cakes with different textures and colors,” Forlenzo said. “Incorporating these different elements makes such a beautiful and original cake. My favorite thing to hear from a customer is that they’re giving me creative freedom. Providing some kind of inspiration, such a theme or color scheme, is most helpful, but allowing me to freely create is when I produce my best work.”

Crave Custom Cakes and Cookies, Newtown

Andrea Saunders said her business, Crave Custom Cakes and Cookies, specializes in both custom cakes and cookie designs. She noted that custom cakes have been particularly popular during the pandemic because people have been unable to have traditionally large parties.”

“I do quite a large variety of cakes, cupcakes and cookies but the most popular ones are the birthday ones with themes or 3D cakes,” Saunders said. “My favorite type of cakes are probably a themed cake or a pretty cake with fresh flowers.”

Sweet Lisa’s Exquisite Cakes, Cos Cob

Lisa Maronian said the bakery she runs with her husband, Stephen, is now celebrating its 28th year in business.

In 2000, Sweet Lisa’s was featured on the Food Network. Of the thousands of cakes she’s baked over the years, Maronian said her favorite was the one she make for her daughter’s first birthday.

“We have followed our dream of providing beautiful and tasty cakes, cookies and cupcakes to Greenwich and the surrounding communities,” Maronian said. “We believe that baking in small batches and designing the sweets we make to each client’s celebration is our extremely important and fulfilling mission.”

Holly B Merry Cakes, Weston

When Holly Merry lost her job last year due to the pandemic, she launched a cottage business called Holly B Merry Cakes.

“Everything I create is done completely by hand, so I take on each cake as if it were a sculpture or piece of art,” Merry said. “I have yet to turn down a design request, no matter how difficult or complex. I feel like each cake gives me the opportunity to elevate my skill set. I approach each one as a challenge and adventure!”

Merry said she decided to create custom cakes during the pandemic when she realized the high demand for them. Her favorite cakes to make, she added, are floral garden cakes.
