STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — For some, Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer.
But for others, the carnival at the Staten Island Mall has marked the beginning of the season for decades.
The carnival by Reithoffer Shows Inc. typically takes over the Mall parking lot, off Richmond Avenue in New Springville, for at least two weeks in May and/or June every year.
The event marked its 25th year on Staten Island in 2019, but it was canceled last year due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
While there is no word yet on when it will make its triumphant return to the borough, an announcement is expected soon.

Visiting the carnival, with its rides, food vendors and games, has been a tradition for many Staten Islanders. Keep scrolling to check out some of the best photos through the years.

Because Reithoffer Shows are from outside New York state, the people working the rides and food stands often are from across the country.
