Getting a traffic ticket can add a serious spike to your auto insurance rates, but certain ones will cost you more than others.
In Hawaiʻi, the most expensive traffic violation is a hit-and-run. It can increase your auto insurance by an average of $1,680, according to recent research by The Zebra, an insurance comparison website.
"Insurance prices are usually based on statistics and algorithms, and each state has a state regulator who is the capital, and they have to approve all of these," said Nicole Beck, a licensed insurance agent for The Zebra.
"There’s something in the math in Hawaiʻi where the insurance companies were able to justify that enormous price spike based on how much they were paying out in claims when those incidents happened, and how they’ve come to determine the fact that these are so dangerous that they need to be priced appropriately," she explained.
Car owners can also buy insurance in bundles, or choose to pay every twelve months to save money.
