The Eagles were looking to bolster their linebacking unit after Alex Singleton left for the Denver Broncos. However, it appears the team addressed that position Saturday.

According to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Eagles signed Kyzir White to a one-year deal. NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport said the contract is worth up to $5 million.

Last season, White had 144 tackles, a sack, two interceptions, and four quarterback hits for the Los Angeles Chargers.

At 6 feet, 2-inches, and 218 pounds, White does not have the prototypical linebacker size, but he make up for it when it comes to play recognition, his tackling, and how he fits what the Eagles do in terms of their coverage scheme. Defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon likes to drop his linebackers deep in zone coverage, mainly when they use a “Tampa 2″ look, which they used a lot last season.

White, who was a safety in college at West Virginia, could not only cover the curl-flat area of the defense but in the middle where linebackers like to operate. White could also play the middle linebacker role in a dime package.

White, 25, may have signed a contract as a “prove it” deal, with the Eagles having the chance to extend them if he plays well in Philadelphia and there is mutual interest. White is still young and will only get better with age. The Eagles have used a lot of money to address the linebacking core this offseason.

The Eagles signed Hassan Reddick from the Carolina Panthers to a three-year, $45 million deal. Having signed White, the Eagles could have a starting lineup that includes Reddick at the strongside backer (SAM) and T.J. Edwards and White both switching between playing middle linebacker (MIKE), and weakside linebacker(WILL).

Even with the White signing, it does not completely eliminate the chance for the Eagles to select a linebacker in this year’s draft. With three picks in the middle of the first round, Utah’s Devin Lloyd would be available around the time the Eagles would be on the clock, filling a role that White currently projects to play.
