After two years of COVID-related disruptions, people will be able to browse the tables at Shelter House’s used book sale like they did for more than two decades before the pandemic. The annual fundraiser was canceled because of the virus in 2020, and last year, books were sold by the bundle instead.
“Proceeds of book and promotion sales benefit Shelter House programs and support services including housing, eviction prevention, and mental health recovery that help hundreds of men, women, and children improve the quality of their lives and move beyond homelessness,” the Iowa City nonprofit said in a written statement.
This year’s book sale will take place on Saturday, March 26, and Sunday, March 27, in the building that used to house the Antique Car Museum of Iowa at 860 Quarry Road in Coralville. Admission is free — although goodwill donations are welcome — and the doors will open at 10:30 a.m. both days and remain open until 4 p.m. Anyone wanting to get head start on other booklovers can buy an early access pass for $10 and start browsing and buying 30 minutes before the doors open on Saturday.
There will be more than just books on offer at the sale, and except for some specially priced items, almost everything will be $3 or less.
Hardcovers, except for coffee table books, will be $3, as will trade paperbacks. Mass-market paperbacks will be priced at $2, and children’s books at $1. CDs, DVDs and vinyl records will be $2. VHS and cassette tapes will be available at 2-for-$1 for anyone who still has devices that can play them. Puzzles and games will be $3 or as priced.
Because the pandemic isn’t over yet, everyone attending the book sale will need to wear a face mask. Masks will be provided to anyone who doesn’t have one.
Shelter House has been providing services for those experiencing homelessness since 1983. Information on how to support Shelter House’s work beyond the book sale is available on its website.
