Reading Auditor Maria Rodriguez says she has never used a city-owned car or city gas card.
“I just want to make public that as a city auditor, I don’t have any city credit cards, I don’t use any gas cards, I don’t drive any car owned by the city,” Rodriguez said. “I just want to clarify that.”
Rodriguez spoke Monday at a City Council committee of the whole meeting.
She said some residents questioned her after the Reading Eagle reported on council’s recent decision to disallow the use of city-owned vehicles and city gas cards by the mayor, city auditor and council members.
The cost-saving measure was adopted unanimously and applies to the positions whether elected or appointed.
The change is intended to help keep current and future city officeholders responsible to and respectful of those they serve, Councilwoman Donna Reed said last week.
“That’s a good point, Maria,” Reed said Monday. “You are exemplary in everything you do.”
Reed noted none of the seven current council members use city-owned vehicles or gas cards.
“So we’re all in the same boat,” she said. “Thank you, Maria, for bringing that up. That’s something probably we should have made clear last week.”
Since taking office, Mayor Eddie Moran had been using secondhand city-owned vehicles to travel to various events inside and outside of the city.
“I take this job very seriously and give 110%,” Moran said last week. “It’s not a 9-to-5 for me, you know. I’m out there many times a day, seven days a week.”
Last year Moran withdrew a request to buy a car and instead began using a former police department vehicle to travel for official duties.
At the time, council had introduced an ordinance to allocate $30,000 to the mayor’s office to buy a vehicle for Moran to continue to make public appearances throughout the city.
