The heart wants what it wants. Sometimes, that means satisfying your sweet tooth craving with nothing but cake.
The popular bakery chain Nothing Bundt Cakes with more than 400 locations across the U.S., is now open in Butler Plaza at 3228 SW 35th St.
The local franchise is owned by Gainesville couple Derrick and Amber Robinson, who previously owned Florida Fun Bikes, a 15-person group bicycle that ran downtown, from 2015 to 2021.
Amber Robinson said they were "looking for that next thing," and decided, "Why not cake?"
“I don’t have a baking background; I just have a cake-fanatic background," she said. "My motto is ‘Life is short, eat dessert first,” and I kind of live by that mantra."

Robinson, who first tried Nothing Bundt Cakes in Scottsdale, Arizona, said their "signature taste" is what makes them different from other cakes.
"We’re known for that slowly melting, moist cake bite," she said. "It’s going to set us apart from any other cake you’ve ever had.”
Available cake flavors include classic vanilla, white chocolate raspberry, red velvet, confetti, lemon, carrot and rotating seasonal flavors.
Amber Robinson said her favorite flavor remains the one that put the company on the map, the chocolate chocolate chip. Her love, however, for the new strawberries and cream flavor is moving up fast.
“It is the best tasting strawberry cake I’ve ever had," she said. "And when you pair it with our frosting, it just tastes amazing."
Amber Robinson said the bakery received rave reviews during this past weekend's soft opening.
“It was crazy to see how many people came through our doors on Friday. We were super packed on Friday, super packed on Saturday and the traffic has been steady," she said.
Residents can help celebrate Nothing Bundt Cakes' grand opening with four days of events, beginning on June 8 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by the Gainesville Chamber of Commerce at 5 p.m.
Giveaways will be held on June 9 and June 11. On June 9, the first 100 guests will receive a coupon for a free Bundtlet (miniature cake) once a month for a year, and on June 11, customers will be treated to a free Confetti Bundlet from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., while supplies last.
Rex & Brody Foundation
On June 10, Amber and Derrick Robinson will use their business to support a cause close to their hearts, the Rex & Brody Foundation. The couple will donate 20% of all sales to the foundation, which aims to educate and empower youth through the game of baseball.
Derrick Robinson, a star player at P.K. Yonge who went on to play professionally for the Cincinnati Reds, is currently an outfield coordinator for the Kansas City Royals.
“Derrick was actually known for being a bunter, so I think it’s really funny and appropriate that we own a bundt cake business," Amber Robinson said.
Donation requests
Amber Robinson said the business will field other donation requests and will try to fulfill them as much as possible. She said she's looking forward to working with the Ronald McDonald House and Alachua County Public Schools.
"We want to make sure that children who wouldn’t have a cake or be able to celebrate their birthday can celebrate in a big way," she said.
Nothing Bundt Cakes is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m to 7 p.m., and Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.
