GRAND RAPIDS, MI — If you’re looking for a rooftop bar with a wide-ranging menu, The Friesian Gastro Pub on Grand Rapids’ Medical Mile might be the perfect spot.
The restaurant, at 720 Michigan St. NE, is housed in the former “Lords Chapel” building. It features a heated covered lower patio with seating for 20 people and a 50-person rooftop deck that opens for the summer on Memorial Day weekend.
“We have a very laid-back, casual vibe,” said owner Craig Jones. “We want people to just enjoy their time. There’s no pressure, we’re not fancy.”
The diverse menu at The Friesian features vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options. The entire restaurant is peanut-free.
“We focus on having a little bit of something for everybody,” Jones said. “We have several vegan options that are absolutely killer and we have a dedicated gluten-free fryer. We keep things fun and exciting.”
The gastro pub offers both a brunch and dinner menu. One of the most popular menu items is the Nashville hot chicken sandwich, made with fried chicken thigh tossed in house-made Nashville hot sauce and topped with lettuce, sliced tomato, pickles and lemon herb aioli for $15.
One of Jones’ personal favorite meals at The Friesian is the wonton soup, made using the chef’s family recipe. The wonton soup has house-made wontons stuffed with pork, shrimp and scallions in a chicken and shiitake mushroom broth with egg noodles, scallions and cilantro for $20. The soup is served with hot chili oil and dark soy sauce.
Or, try the short rib rigatoni, made with red wine braised short ribs, leeks and cherries tossed in a tomato sauce and rigatoni and topped with parsley and aged Grana Padano cheese for $20.
No matter what you pick for dinner, you’re going to want to save room for dessert. The Friesian’s carrot cake is a crowd favorite, made with a chai carrot custard, brown butter caramel, loaded with walnuts and topped with cream cheese frosting and candied carrot dust for $10 a slice.
If you’re in more of a tropical mood, try a slice of the hibiscus vegan cheesecake, topped with toasted coconut, candied hibiscus and candied lime for $12.
Jones recommends making a reservation to dine at The Friesian, especially on the weekends. To make a reservation, call the restaurant at 616-825-3001 or go online to friesiangr.com.
“Come with an open mind,” Jones said. “We’ve got a chill vibe and it should be a great time for everybody.”
The Friesian Gastro Pub is open 3 p.m.-10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 3 p.m.-midnight on Friday, 11 a.m.-midnight on Saturday and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sunday.
