Pond Branch, SC (Paul Kirby) – A collision seriously injured a man after he lost control of his car Saturday night and rolled it over. The collision occurred in the 3100 block of Neely Wingard Road near Whiskey Road just after 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 4, 2020.
Lexington County EMS responded with a supervisor and an advance life support team. The fire service also had a number of personnel and pieces of equipment on scene as well.
The first crews to arrive were firefighters. They reported that the driver was nearly thrown from the car while it rolled over. They immediately began an assessment of the patient and reported he was breathing and had a pulse but was unconscious. They began basic medical care until the paramedics arrived. They also had other firefighters on fire guard in the event they were needed.
After the EMS crew began their assessment, they requested that a Lifenet Medical Helicopter launch and land at Calks Ferry and Pond Branch Roads at Keisler’s Crossroads. Another fire crew was dispatched to that location to set up the landing zone and direct the helicopter in as it made its approach.
When the ALS crew had done everything they could to stabilize the patient at the scene of the accident, they drove to the landing zone and the man’s care was transferred to the helicopter’s medical team. He was then flown to Prisma Health’s Palmetto Richland Campus where the Midland’s Trauma Center is located.
The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department had deputies on the scene that were crucial in keeping the first responders safe as they worked. Those deputies were able to stop traffic until the patient was transported from the scene.
We have no further information on the patient. The status of his condition is protected by privacy laws. The SCHP is investigating the collision.
