MASSIVE EVERETT WATERFRONT FIRE POSSIBLY MOST EXPENSIVE IN HISTORY

As most of you know, on Thursday July 16, 2020, a massive fire erupted on the Everett waterfront in an apartment construction project managed by Sea Level Properties in the redevelopment area.  This was a four-alarm fire that destroyed the south building of the Waterfront Place Apartments.  First and foremost, commendations to all the fire response personnel and many other agencies from far and wide who responded to battle this immense blaze, risking their safety to contain this fire, protect nearby structures, and benefit the entire Everett community.  A gusty wind made this more dangerous and required responses to brush and house fires along Grand and Rucker Avenues, some of which sustained damage.  Embers were raining down in size from a dime to a softball.  Thankfully, there were no fatalities as the buildings were unoccupied, and only a minor burn injury to a fireperson.  Three of their vehicles, however, did incur significant damage.  A ladder truck, a fire engine and an aid car are still being assessed to determine if they are reparable or will need to be replaced.  The total response involved 53 fire apparatus at the scene of the fire, including 28 fire engines and ladder trucks, seven EMS vehicles, and the remainder falling under a miscellaneous category.  The Everett Fire Marshal, Kurtis Brown, was on hand managing the response.  Power is still off in some areas of the waterfront while they assess damage and determine the saftey of re-energizing some areas.  The Everett Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosive (ATF), and the Washington State Patrol Crime Laboratory Division (CLD), are assisting the Everett Fire Department in the ongoing investigation.  At this time, no criminal activity is suspected in this fire.  An early estimate of damage is being placed at between $25 and 30 million dollars, likely making it one of, if not the most economically destructive blaze in Snohomish County history.  This estimate does not consider damage to the north building, neighboring structures and residential properties.  For perspective, the 1909 Courthouse fire in Everett resulted in approximately $5 million damage in today’s dollars, while the Great Snohomish fire of 1911 resulted in $4 million by today’s standards.  There were numerous mill fires along the waterfront in the 1920’s and 30’s.The one old-timers seem to remember the most was the William Hulbert Mill Company fire in 1956 that came in at around $1.4 million in today’s currency.  A major point to understand is the Everett Fire Department has backup agreements with fire departments in North King County.  This means your local fire stations are being covered by other departments so while you may fear every emergency vehicle is deployed elsewhere, there is still emergency response available to the community in the event of a medical emergency, such as a heart attack or other injury, an auto accident or even another fire event.  Should you or someone you know have fire related photographs or information, you can upload it at https://everettpd-wa.evidence.com/axon/citizen/public/2020-66971, to assist in the investigation.
