With auction houses turning their attention to online bidding only during lockdown, Christie’s has just revealed that they’ve broken a world record for the most expensive jewel ever sold in an online auction during its Jewels Online sale finale yesterday.
As one of the final lots of the sale, Christie’s featured the most expensive lot the house had ever auctioned off in a digital sale, a rare 28.86-carat D-Colour, VVS1 clarity, Type 11a diamond, set on a platinum ring. The estimate was $1-2 million but after 31 competitive bids from Asia to America, the diamond fetched a staggering $2,115,000 (£1.9m) - the highest price ever achieved during an online auction.
The emerald-cut stone is one of the rarest. The ‘D’ signifies its clarity, the diamond is formed of pure carbon with no impurities making it completely colourless and thus making this one of the most coveted diamonds of all time. According to The Telegraph, there are less than two percent of Type 11a diamonds in the world and ahead of the sale, Christie’s called the stone, a ‘miraculous phenomenon.’
Rahul Kadakia, International Head of Jewellery at Christie’s, said in a statement: ‘The spectacular 28.86 carat D color diamond received immediate attention upon its announcement. The stone possesses a transparency and purity which can only be found in the world’s finest diamonds. The sale of this exceptional stone established the record for a jewel sold in an online-only auction, demonstrating greater client confidence in Christie’s digital ability and online sale platform.’
In 2011, the auction house was the first to create its own integrated online sale platform for its Elizabeth Taylor Online sale, which saw sales reach a total of $9.5 million.
