Many games over the years have risen in price over the years when being sold second hand due to their rarity. Many games that didn't initially sell well or weren't produced in high numbers are incredibly difficult to find, making them sought after pieces for all sorts of video game collectors.

When games are sold at auction, the demand for these games can get so immense that the prices can rise higher than what most people might make in a year. These are some of the most expensive games put up at auction in no particular order.

Super Mario Bros - $114,000

One of the most recent cases of expensive video game sales happened recently on July 10th, 2020 where a sealed copy of Super Mario Bros for the NES was sold for $114,000 at auction. What helped the price was the special sealing that the game was in.

This copy of Super Mario Bros was sealed in a special packaging from when Nintendo was still performing test marketing in New York City and L.A. with the packaging of their games. The sold game had a special cardboard tab that helped it hang on hooks inside stores, but this design was later cut due to plastic seals making the tabs useless. However, this caused this copy of Super Mario Bros to become incredibly rare and unique compared to all other sold copies.

Gamma Attack - $500,000

Gamma Attack is an Atari 2600 game developed by Gammation with only one known cartridge ever being produced. It is currently owned by video game collector, Anthony DeNardo. The game was developed as a test game of sorts by Gammation's owner to utilize the special Atari controllers sold by the company. It became available for purchase, but it ended up becoming an urban legend of a game with many questioning if it even existing.

After discovering a working copy, Anthony DeNardo put the game on eBay for a time where people could buy it for $500,000, although it seems that nobody had purchased it. There also seems to be another copy of Gamma Attack currently being sold on eBay for $999.95 with the addition of the game being signed by the game's creator.

Tetris - $1,000,000

Those who are versed in video game history may know of the rights issues with the Tetris series over the years. For those who don't know, the original creators of Tetris didn't have the rights to their own game for a long time due to it being created in the USSR, making Tetris the property of the government. However, the success of Tetris resulted in the rights being passed around a lot. This eventually led to a version created for the Sega Genesis that was ordered to be destroyed due to it technically being created illegally.

That is what this version of Tetris is. It was additionally signed by the man credited as the creator of Tetris, Alexey Pakitnov and put on eBay for $1,000,000 as a buy now price. Due to its rarity and the history behind it, many people would want this game in their collections, but it may not be worth the price for most people.

Stadium Events - $41,977

Extremely Rare NES Game Stadium Events Sells on Ebay

Like the copy of Super Mario Bros, this game was actually sold with it being bought after an auction for $41,977 in 2017. Also like Tetris, this game has an interesting history to it relating to why it is so rare.

Stadium Events was a game developed by Bandai with the main appeal to it being that it was controlled by players stepping on a large plastic mat that connected to their NES. However, after Nintendo bought the rights to the game and the mat, they remade the game under the title of World Class Track Meet. However, they recalled all copies of Stadium Events before its release and destroyed them to avoid customer confusion.

The seller of this game had a sealed copy, making it especially rare compared to a used copy. With how little time it had on store shelves, Stadium Events can be quite the crown jewel of many collections.
