New Orleans isn’t the only place to find this traditional yeast cake that reminds us of a cinnamon roll in the shape of a giant donut, complete with royal icing, and purple, green, and gold sugar.

These cakes are thought to have come to New Orleans from France in 1870, and their name hails from the three kings who visited baby Jesus at the Epiphany, which comes each year in early January.

The cakes vaguely resemble a crown, and the vibrant colors on top represent more than the colors of Mardi Gras. The purple stands for justice; green stands for faith, and the gold stands for power.

It’s impossible to talk about a king cake if you don’t mention the tiny plastic baby that is traditionally baked inside. Often, modern bakeries will include their plastic babies in the middle of the donut-like cake or on top, to avoid some serious choking hazards. Traditionally, the lucky person who finds the baby in their slice is said to have good luck, becomes the "king" or "queen" for the day and gets to bring a king cake to the next social gathering.

But where can Cincinnatians take part in this colorful and richly sweet Mardi Gras tradition? We have a few local bakeries you might want to check out:

Busken Bakery

People begin pre-ordering king cakes from this Cincinnati bakery in the beginning of January. “They’re extremely popular. That was no different this year,” says Nikki Newman, account ambassador at Busken Bakery in Hyde Park. “We are offering them on our website for the first time this year, and they are going like hotcakes.”

Busken Bakery is selling a single-serve king cake for $4, a small that can serve 12 people for $15, or a large that can serve 24 people for $25. Traditional cinnamon filling is available, or go all out and try their cheese, strawberry cheese, or berry deluxe fillings. Disclaimer: the individual size can only be served with cinnamon filling.

Order on their website and select a time to pick up your decadent king cake from either of their four locations in Hyde Park, Eastgate, Highland Heights, or Springdale. Pick up either on Feb. 15 or 16.

The BonBonerie

This beloved bakery on Madison Road in O’Bryonville is cooking up king cakes in two sizes – an individual cake for $5 and a full size that will feed 4-6 people, depending on how it’s cut, for $10.95.
