A Philadelphia toddler who was allegedly used as a “human shield” by his father during a 2019 shooting has died.
Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner on Thursday confirmed the death of 3-year-old Yaseem Jenkins, calling it “a tough moment” during a press conference.
Krasner said he believes that Jenkins death stemmed from injuries he sustained from being shot almost two and a half years ago.
“We are awaiting a medical examiner’s report on the cause of death, but we have reason to believe his cause of death is his original injury,” Krasner said.
Jenkins was 11 months old at the time of the shooting on October 19, 2019, when his father, Nafes Monroe, used him as a shield during a drug deal with Francisco Ortiz in North Philadelphia. Monroe tried to pay for drugs using counterfeit money, which led to Ortiz firing shots. Ortiz was charged with attempted murder.
The shooting left Jenkins in critical condition as he was struck four times, including the head and chest.
Monroe was arrested for his involvement in the incident. Philadelphia police charged him with recklessly endangering another person and endangering the welfare of a child. He later pleaded guilty to both counts, according to KYW-TV.
During last week’s press conference, Krasner announced that if medical examiners discover Jenkins’ death to be a result of the injuries he sustained in the shooting, more charges could follow.
Krasner offered condolences to the toddler’s family. He also said multiple units have been in contact with Jenkins’ family to offer support, including offering assistance with funeral expenses. He died on Tuesday, his family said on a GoFundMe page.
“Yaseem fought long and hard to recover from his injuries while still being the strong happy kid he was, but sadly lost the battle,” reads a GoFundMe campaign created to cover Jenkins’ funeral costs. “It saddens us to have to lay him to rest at such a young age. Our family is devastated and heartbroken by his unexpected passing.”
