DAYTON — People living in Florida are still picking up the pieces from Hurricane Ian’s destruction late last month.

But one form of concern that now could impact people in the Miami Valley and rest of the county, is flood-damaged cars hitting the market.

News Center 7′s Mike Campbell asked an area technician what those in the market for used cars should be looking for to make sure you don’t end up with a damaged vehicle.

Matt Miller, owner of Carl’s Body Shop in Dayton encouraged people looking at a used car to get a technician to check it out, and make sure there are not signs of flooding or other damage.

“Have (the technician) take the door panel off, you will look in there, see a water line, maybe even standing water inside, you definitely don’t want to buy that vehicle,” Miller said.

“Pull the carpets up, see if there is sand or water, if it feels damp, another thing if you walk up to a car with the windows up, see a lot of moisture on the glass.”

Vehicle watchdog group CARFAX estimated nearly 400,000 flood-damaged cars are already on the road and Hurricane Ian is expected to nearly double that number with around 358,000 more expected to hit the market.

“Hopefully the insurance companies do their jobs with these totaled cars  and not re-sell them without making sure they are corrects and don’t have faulty titles,” Johnny Steele, of Moraine said.

Miller added its best for buyers to stay away from cars that have a salvage title attached to it. One reason, if there was flood damage, those cars could have electrical and computer module trouble, plus possibility of mold that could impact the health of anyone in the car.

“You want to know for sure, if you get a car like that you’re going to have all kinds of problems,” Miller said.

Many used cars are bought by dealers at auction, and some are not aware of the damage caused by flood waters. That’s why Miller said it’s worth the time, and extra precaution, to have the car checked out before you buy.
