Italian restaurant charges Rs 1800 for slicing a birthday cake in half, sparks online controversy - IndiaTimes

An Italian restaurant recently stirred up a controversy by charging 20 euros (roughly Rs 1800) for slicing a birthday cake into pieces for a family celebration, leaving the internet in disbelief. The bill, which went viral on X (formerly called Twitter), displayed a fee of "20 X Servizio Torta" or "20 x cake service."
The UK tabloid, The Sun, reported that the cost of slicing the cake was calculated at 86p per person. Despite the group spending 121 euros on other items such as pizza, wine, and beer, the cake-cutting charge caught significant attention.
This isn't the first instance of an Italian restaurant charging exorbitant fees. Earlier this year, a receipt from "Bar Pace" garnered attention for charging over 2 euros (approximately 181 rupees) merely to cut a sandwich in half. The charge was itemized as "diviso da meta" or "divided in half."
Another viral receipt from the site TripAdvisor displayed the caption "Unbelievable but true," shedding light on the trend of high bill charges.
In response to the criticism, restaurant owners defended their pricing by emphasizing the additional costs associated with fulfilling specific requests. The owner of the restaurant explained that requests for separate servings incurred extra expenses such as additional saucers, napkins, and staff efforts.
While the age-old adage "Customer is always right" holds true, the owner highlighted the reality that special requests come with supplementary costs.
Another incident showcasing extreme bill charges unfolded at "Osteria del Cavolo in Finale Ligure." The owner, Ida Germano, charged two euros for serving a customer an empty plate. The owner clarified that the customer's order led to the use of multiple saucers due to shared dishes. The charges were justified as covering dishwashing and added services.
In both instances, the cases of escalated billing underscored the intricacies of restaurant pricing and the rationale behind seemingly excessive charges.
