The popular YouTube mechanic Scotty Kilmer has warned drivers to think twice when buying a second-hand electric car.

The mechanic of 55 years regularly posts short videos to his social media accounts giving viewers advice on maintaining and buying cars.

In one of his most recent videos, Scotty tells viewers that many electric vehicles on the second-hand car market are significantly cheaper than new.

He explained: “I had a neighbour in Houston, he bought a Model S Tesla. The original price was $126,000, he bought it used with 15,000 miles and paid $45,000 for the car.

“And that’s what they’re really worth and people are going to find out as time goes on.”

However, whilst it might seem that buyers can easily pick up a bargain, Scotty warned that there is a reason why the cars are losing their value.

Modern electric vehicles feature lithium-ion batteries, much like the ones found in smartphones and laptops, in order to power the motor.

While they are increasing in efficiency, with some of the latest electric models capable of over 400 miles per charge, they gradually hold less charge as they grow older.

In addition, whilst electric car owners are able to buy replacement batteries, Scotty highlighted that their high prices may put some motorists off making the switch from gasoline to electric.

He said: “Now of course, if you think about it, you buy a new electric car and the battery should last quite some time, right?

“But let’s say that you buy a used electric car with like 100,000 miles on it, out of warranty, the battery’s gone. If it’s a Tesla, $20,000 (£15,700) to $30,000 (£23,550) to replace it.”

Across America sales of electric vehicles continue to grow, with 257,000 registered in the first quarter of 2023, accounting for seven percent of overall car sales figures.

Registration data from Experian noted that the figure was 63 percent higher than during the first three months of 2022.

The most popular electric vehicle brand in America was Tesla, who registered 60 percent of all battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in America.
