Popular Birmingham pastry chef delivers flashy, graffiti style cake to R&B singer before sold out show - AL.com

R&B singer Chris Brown received a four-layer graffiti style cake from a Birmingham based pastry artist outside of his dressing room at the BJCC before hitting the stage on Thursday night.

Kristal Bryant, head pastry chef and owner of K&J’s Elegant Pastries, created the cake specifically for the controversial singer.

“I did a lot of research on what he may like in a cake. He likes to draw and paint. So my initial thought was to grab some of his art work to print out to create an edible images,” explained Bryant.

“I also included the tour’s logo and the galaxy theme. And then I read online that he likes strawberry cheesecake, so the bottom layer is a vanilla cake with strawberry filling and cheesecake chunks, middle tier was Oreo’s cookie and creme, and then the top layer was just vanilla. Then I was able to get the topper made with blinged out lights. I work with a lady, Andrea Smith, who makes toppers for my cakes, and she created the ‘Breezy in Bham’ sign with lights on the sign. I freaked out because I really wanted some kind of antic to make the cake special.”

Bryant works with Sodexo, the catering company at the BJCC, as a preferred dessert vendor.

However, this is the first artist that the head chef has created a cake for at the concert venue.

But Bryant says she does plan to deliver cakes to Nicki Minaj and Sexxy Red when they stop here for their fall tour dates.

Thursday night’s show was Brown’s first time in Birmingham since 2014.

According to Sam South, Communications Director for the BJCC, the show at the Legacy Arena was sold out when tickets went on sale in March with more than 10,000 people in attendance.

The R&B singer’s “11:11 Tour” is named after his latest release, a 2023 double album that includes the track “Summer Too Hot,” which was nominated for Grammy this year in the category of Best R&B Performance.

Brown has earned 22 Grammy nods during his high-profile career and won a trophy in 2012 for Best R&B Album for “F.A.M.E.”

The tour started in June in Detroit and ends on Aug. 6 in Los Angeles at Crypto.com Arena, according to his current schedule.
