A cake from an H-E-B store in Galveston went viral for its odd theme: a Hurricane Beryl cake complete with the outflow bands of rain, vibrantly colored to resemble the storm on a Doppler radar.
Chris Ramirez posted a photo of the baked good on Facebook on Sunday evening, before Beryl's arrival in Texas. The photo accumulated more than 11,000 likes and nearly 5,000 shares.
The Category 1 Hurricane Beryl made its third and final landfall near Matagorda early Monday. Rainfall brought by Beryl caused near-record flooding in the Houston area, raising some bayous, like the White Oak Bayou and Buffalo Bayou, by at least a dozen feet in the span of nine hours Monday.
At least 7 have died in the Houston area from fallen trees and flooding, and one person died from a fire that was an impact of the storm. Another person in Bossier, Louisiana, died during a tornado induced by Beryl.
Hurricane Beryl cake brings mixed opinions
Several meme accounts and other social media pages have since shared the viral cake on their posts, and to no surprise, commenters have mixed opinions of the storm-themed cake.
"I worked in a bakery that made hurricane cakes," one commenter wrote. "The fun people of the world prep and then party during a hurricane because you most likely will get the day off." Another commenter, who claimed to be a meteorologist, joked that they were offended — but only because Hurricane Beryl is "spinning clockwise, when it should be counter-clockwise. "
One user commented with a picture of the Spanish-version from their local H-E-B, which says "Huracan Beryl."
Others weren't as keen on the cake.
"If someone gifts me a hurricane cake... they will be the first one to taste it," one user wrote, adding, "all of it!! In their face.
"A little tacky after what hit Texas," wrote another.
Why Publix stopped selling similar cakes last year
After a similar Hurricane Ian cake from Publix went viral in 2022, the East Coast grocery chain announced last year that it would no longer sell hurricane cakes.
According to WPTX, the Florida-based grocer posted on its website at the time that they don't "produce bakery cakes that would make light of a natural disaster."
"It is never our goal to offend anyone with the products we offer and I apologize that we let you down," the company said then.
