As Hurricane Dorian barrels toward the east coast of Florida, some Publix bakeries are tracing the path of the storm ... with icing.
Pictures of a hurricane-themed cookie cake surfaced on social media this week. The chocolate chip cookie concoction features a sugary green outline of Florida, tufts of blue icing waves, the cone of uncertainty and the bright red eye of the storm.
Don’t rush out to brave the last-minute shopping crowds. According to the Publix Helps Twitter account, only some individual locations chose to make the cakes. However, Cinotti’s Bakery in Jacksonville is currently preparing Dorian-themed donuts.
It’s not the first time the Lakeland-based grocery chain has ushered in a storm with baked goods. Hurricane Irma inspired several sweet confections back in 2017.
Two years ago, some shoppers thought the Irma sweets were in bad taste. There’s also been backlash for the latest Publix cakes. After all, forecasters think Dorian may hit Florida as a high category 3 hurricane.
The Publix Helps Twitter account has been responding to concerned shoppers this morning.
Publix has not yet responded to a request for comment.
