- Shoppers are being warned to be mindful of the additional fee to avoid paying more at the checkout
- Walmart's cakes start at $11 to serve 12 people and go up to $50 for 96 servings
Walmart shoppers are being warned to be mindful of hidden costs at the checkout to avoid being charged more than they first expected.
The retail giant offers custom cakes which can be modified to customer's taste but surprisingly will charge extra for its strawberry and 'Bavarian creme' fillings.
The price of those fillings are hidden and not immediately visible when ordering the cake online.
The extra fee is only added when the filling is selected, increasing the total charge of the sweet treat.
Walmart offers its cake in four sizes and the cost of the filling will vary depending on the size of the cake, though the strawberry and Bavarian creme options are the same price.
For a what it calls a 'full' cake - with 96 servings - it charges a base price of $50, but adds and additional $9 for the filling.
A cake half the size, with 48 servings, cost $35 and $5 for the filling. The 24-serving cake costs $23 and $3 for the filling.
For the smallest cake, half the size of that, which serves 12 people, the base price is $11 but the fillings will still be an extra $3.
The extra fee can be avoided simply by clicking on 'No selection' when it comes choosing a filling.
Other aspects that are customizable for free include the type of cake itself. Options are: 'white', 'chocolate', 'yellow' and 'marble'.
Icing can also be chosen to decorate the cake main body of the cake - options are either 'buttercreme' or whipped, and both are available in a variety of colors.
Finally ornamental icing along the bottom and on the top of the cake can be chosen. Those are available as either beads or shells.
