The World's Most Expensive Syrahs - Wine-Searcher

Is there anyone who doesn't have a soft spot for Syrah?

It's hard to think of a more approachable, dependable and downright sociable grape variety – it makes wines of power, generosity and finesse across the globe, across all price points and more reliably than many red varieties, but it always remains in the shadow of others.

The Bordeaux varieties – particularly Cabernet Sauvignon – and Pinot Noir grab all the limelight, despite being trickier, more finicky grapes to deal with. Meanwhile, Syrah continues to attract fans, whether as the more patrician Syrah or as Shiraz, the brasher Australian version.

Syrah is the grape of the Rhône Valley and its influence stretches right through that famously divided region. The northern part is very much Syrah country, with the powerful, long-lived and much-loved wines of Côte Rôtie, Cornas and Hermitage, while its influence is still felt in the more Grenache-friendly south, where its impact on Châteaneuf-du-Pape is crucial.

Meanwhile, in Australia, it makes that country's greatest wines and dominates across the wine spectrum, accounting for more than a quarter of all grapes planted and providing the lion's share of the most searched-for wines, as well as the best, most expensive and best-value wines.

The list of the most expensive Syrahs is revealing. (Please note, the prices quoted are snapshots taken on a particular day and may be slightly different by the time you read this.)

The Most Expensive Syrahs on Wine-Searcher:

The interesting thing on that list – apart from the yawning gap between first and second places – is surely the presence of the same wine twice. Grange makes it into second and 10th place, with two slightly different bottlings. Perhaps taking their cue from Scotch distiller The Macallan (who started releasing old whiskies in Lalique decanters for breath-taking prices), Penfolds is now releasing its wines in fancy packaging, prompting a big increase in the wine's average price.

That will be some comfort for the winery, after last year's most expensive wine, the Penfolds Bin 170 Kalimna Shiraz, didn't make the list this year, since there hasn't been a vintage in the past decade.

Another odd entry on the list is the wine in fifth place. God's Hill Menzel Shiraz was, until recently, a perfectly normal Barossa Shiraz, going about its business in the $50-$100 price bracket. Then, in October 2018, the average price leaped from $104 to $347. And it wasn't finished there; in June last year the price skyrocketed from $330 to $645 and it currently stands north of $700. Given most of the offers are from the winery itself, they've clearly decided that this is the price the wine should be selling for, so good for them.

Overall, though, prices haven't increased dramatically since last year. Only the Cuvée Cathelin (up by $319 or 4.6 percent) and the Juge Cornas (which had an average price rise of $102 per bottle, or 16.5 percent) have appreciated appreciably, as it were. The rest are within a dollar or two of last year's average prices and the Verset Cornas has even come down, albeit by a tiny 1.1 percent. Even the two wines from SQN have remained stable, which is unusual given that winery's collector appeal.

It's just one more reason to love this already eminently lovable variety.
