The World's Most Expensive Rieslings - Wine-Searcher

If kind words translated into dollars, very few people would be able to afford Riesling.

The grape variety's popularity among wine writers, winemakers and a small coterie of wine lovers means it tends to get far more coverage than perhaps sales might justify – its problem is that the rave reviews from the critics don't tend to flow through into sales.

The greatest compliment paid to Riesling tends to be how widely it is planted. You can drink excellent examples from places as distant from Riesling's native Germany as New Zealand, Australia, Canada and Washington and if you ask any winemaker for their favorite variety to work with and to drink, you will frequently get Riesling as your answer.

However, given the stubborn consumer resistance to Riesling, it remains admirably affordable, for the most part. Indeed, if you were to list the best-value wines available today, Riesling would feature strongly in the mix, given its relatively high quality and relatively low price.

Except for Germany, of course. Yes, you can get perfectly nice, affordable Riesling from Germany, but the top tier of wines, beloved for their richness and longevity, really don't fall into the bargain category. And while Riesling might have trouble attracting the general public, it still has a hold on the affections of wine collectors, which ensures that, while other wines might be slipping back in the face of recent headwinds, Riesling is proving remarkably immune to outside forces.

Before we go into detail and list the most expensive Rieslings, we should probably re-emphasize what we mean when we talk about "most expensive" in relation to wine.

We calculate a global average price per wine, based on the actual prices being charged in the thousands of retail wine lists that we monitor globally. We don't take into account producers' own claims of price (or sales, for that matter) or those of the various wine representative bodies; we measure the data we can trust – our own.

The Most Expensive Rieslings on Wine-Searcher:

The main point of discussion in the list above is that, if you are looking for the top Rieslings, there is only one place to look: Germany. Indeed, there isn't a non-German wine in the top 25 most expensive Rieslings.

The other thing of note is the tenacity of the pricing of Riesling's (and, by extension, Germany's) top wines. In the current environment, prices in other regions have been either stagnating or, in extreme cases, going backwards, but the wines above have sailed along serenely, adding value with every passing year.

The aggregate cost of the 10 bottles above stands at $46,798, a rise of just 2.64 percent on last year, but a healthy 15.1 percent since 2018; those are rises that many wine regions would envy.

Another feature of this year's list is a new name hitting the top 10. Two wines from Markus Molitor have shouldered their way into the limelight. In one sense, that's a reflection of a long line of high scores for his wines – back in 2015, three of them were awarded 100-point scores by the Wine Advocate. However none of those wines have made this list and the two that did have seen quite spectacular prices rises; the Wehlener Sonnenuhr wine had an average retail price of just $494 in April 2018, while the Zeltlinger wine has skyrocketed from $1600 a bottle in January of this year to its current $4000.

That's an awful lot of kind words right there.
