The flavors of king cake take center stage this month at the cocktail and food demonstrations at the Jefferson Parish Library.
Elizabeth Williams, founder and president of the Southern Food and Beverage Museum, and Matt Haines, author of "The Big Book of King Cake" and "The Little Book of King Cake," will team up for two presentations.
The first one, at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 29, will be at the Jane O’Brien Chatelain West Bank Regional Library, 2751 Manhattan Blvd., Harvey.
The second will be at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 30, at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon Ave., Metairie.
Haines will bring several types of king cake from local bakeries to discuss and sample. Williams will explain how to incorporate king-cake-flavored vodka into cocktails.
Williams was for five years the president and CEO of the University of New Orleans Foundation, and was the director of the arts administration program at the University of New Orleans. She also practiced law with an emphasis on nonprofit organizations and giving.
Haines has written for local publications such as The Times-Picayune, Gambit Weekly, Very Local New Orleans and GoNOLA.com, as well as technology companies and national publications.
Patrons will be allowed to sample the dishes that are prepared during the demonstration. However, these demonstrations are not intended to serve as meals.
GENEALOGY: Gwen Kelley, a librarian who specializes in genealogy and local history, will lead a series of 13 seminars at the East Bank Regional Library.
Each session begins at 1:30 p.m., beginning on Jan. 31, and concluding April 25. The following sessions are coming up:
- Jan. 31: U.S. Census
- Feb. 7: Vital records
- Feb. 14: Newspapers and obituaries
- Feb. 21: Cemetery records
- Feb. 28: Military records
BOATING SAFETY: The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries will conduct a boating safety class from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 27, at the River Ridge Library, 8825 Jefferson Highway, River Ridge. Preregistration is recommended by going to the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries website.
FINANCIAL LITERACY: Two sessions are remaining in a series of presentations on financial management lead by Sheila Cao, a personal finances consultant based in New Orleans, begins a series of presentations on financial management. They take place at 7 p.m. Jan. 24 and 31 at the East Bank Regional Library.
PLANT SWAP: Don’t forget the Terrytown Plant Swap from 11 a.m. to noon Jan. 25, at the Terrytown Library, 680 Heritage Ave., Terrytown.
POETRY AND MUSIC: The Poetry and Music Club for young adults meets at 7 p.m. Jan. 24, at the Harahan Library, 219 Soniat Ave., Harahan.
The session focuses on ancient Greek lyric poetry. Patrons can join a discussion of poetry and songs, read/ listen to works from different poets/artists, get involved in writing exercises, and/or share their work with others. Open to teens and adults.
WORD PLAY: The Scrabble Scramble will take place from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Jan. 27 at the Lakeshore Library, 1000 W. Esplanade, Metairie.
Test your vocabulary skills, strategize tile placement, and compete against fellow word nerds in friendly matches. With a variety of game boards and dictionaries available, patrons can showcase their linguistic prowess and expand their lexicon.
LIVE MUSIC: The Jerusalem Shrine Big Band performs a swing concert at 7 p.m. Jan. 30, at the Jane O’Brien Chatelain West Bank Regional Library.
DRIVING LESSONS: Are you studying for your driver’s license? The library can help. Go to the library’s website, then click on the databases tab. On the left-hand side of the page, there is a tab titled “Driving Tests.”
When patrons click on it, they will find handbooks and practice tests for motorcycles, commercial vehicles, and cars. Materials are available in Spanish. It’s everything patrons need to go to the Department of Motor Vehicles with confidence.
