'The Greatest Baker' contestant Theresa Miller hopes for your vote - Democrat & Chronicle

CANANDAIGUA, NY – Until now, the absolute coolest cake Theresa Miller ever baked was a replica of a “rat rod.”

If you don’t know, a rat rod is a custom-built vehicle made of used parts or, in some cases, parts made from items not even found on a car. And the wife of the late rat rod maker messaged Miller, of Canandaigua, to see if she could make a cake for his memorial service.

Miller had five days, and she crossed the finish line with a spectacular creation that involved wood for a platform, 15 or so sheet cakes and an awful lot of attention to detail for all the edible “car parts” she needed to fashion.

Phew.

“It took five guys to carry this thing out of my house,” Miller said. “It was gigantic.”

Now, Miller, who only bakes cakes and other goodies for friends and family and even then, only on request, is involved in another cool project.

'The Greatest Baker' contest

Miller is taking part in "The Greatest Baker" online contest. Should Miller win it all, she will meet “The Cake Boss” and pastry chef Buddy Valastro, be featured in the “Bake from Scratch” magazine and win $10,000.

Last fall, Miller was notified she was accepted into the contest and has been moving closer to the final at each stage.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Miller is in the quarterfinals and ranked in eighth place. She will need to win to move into the next round.

The voting ends at 10 p.m. Jan. 18 for this round.

“I was very nervous to start with, but now I’m super excited,” Miller said, praising her fans – some of whom she doesn’t even know – for voting for her. “I’ve never realized how much the community backs people up. I feel like everybody is into this and supportive.”

Theresa Miller's artful cakes

Every flower on this wedding cake is created by hand using fondant. "Everything is edible and that’s how I love doing my cakes," Theresa Miller of Canandaigua says. "(The) worst thing to me is you’re at a wedding ready to cut your cake and have to remove things. This way everything is edible and you can dig in."

So, while last weekend, when just about everyone was figuring out their Buffalo Bills football playoff plans, Miller was baking, and not just any old cake. This one was to win the Critic’s Pick prize as part of the competition.

Her task was to make the kind of cake that if you look at it, you know right then and there you just want to eat this cake because it just looks delicious, Miller said.

“I have to make something that looks like that,” Miller said.

Miller is used to combining her artistic and culinary skills.

Miller made a cake resembling a snowmobile for Jill Morich of Bristol. And yes, of course, Morich is voting for Miller.

“It was a hit, and it was delicious,” Morich said. “The cake was huge and so much bigger than I thought it was going to be. It tasted awesome; it came out almost exactly like the picture I sent her. It was great. She did an awesome job.”

Baking cakes as an escape

Theresa Miller, who is in a contest trying to be The Greatest Baker, works on a specialty cake.

Miller, who is a mom and grandmom (with more grandkids on the way), is a rehabilitation specialist who works with people with developmental disabilities in the home healthcare field and is a part-time server at the Hilltop Restaurant in Canandaigua.

Baking is her escape.

Miller started making birthday cakes and other goodies for her kids. Then, friends and family started reaching out.

“Next thing I know I was doing weddings all over the place. I absolutely love it,” Miller said. “Baking cakes is very relaxing and fun, and I get to create. It’s kind of like getting away.”
