We picked 32 of the best places to get a king cake in the New Orleans metro, and after weeks of voting and hundreds of thousands of responses, the people have spoken.
With 9,786 votes in the final round, Ayu Bakehouse in the Marigny has been dubbed the winner. Loretta's Authentic Pralines was the runner-up, with 5,543 votes.
The king cake bracket had five rounds, with 320,030 total votes cast.
Ayu and Loretta's held the top spots for the majority of each round, but Ayu was the sole king cake vendor to be in the top four for every round of the bracket.
The votes have been coming in, and our NOLA.com king cake bracket is down to two contenders: Ayu Bakehouse and Loretta's Authentic Pralines.
This is only the second Carnival season for Ayu Bakehouse, which opened in the spring of 2022. This is a bakery café that brings nice morning energy to Frenchmen Street, a block away from the main stretch of popular nightlife.
Ayu is a small shop that decided to go big on king cake, rolling out three versions for its debut last year. All are back this season too: the most traditional, called the Croissant City Classic; a non-traditional chocolate babka king cake; and a savory king cake (its own non-traditional tradition), dubbed the “king muffuletta.” We picked the Croissant City Classic for the best head-to-head comparison.
Note: Ayu encourages pre-ordering king cakes; you might get lucky and find one on the rack, but that’s a gamble. Ayu ships king cakes nationwide.
