BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) - It’s the time of year when king cakes rule. At Le Bakery in Biloxi, they began selling king cakes a few days ago and had people lining up for orders.
“I really wasn’t expecting a big crowd on the opening day, just because we have so many great choices with bakeries here on the Coast,” Sue Le Nguyen-Torjusen said.
“I figured everyone else had been making them and advertising that they’ll have them available,” Nguyen-Torjusen said. “So we were taking pre-orders, and with the walk-ins that day, we sold out in 25 minutes with a line out the door before we opened.”
“It’s a very short king cake and Mardi Gras season with it falling on Feb. 13.”
During that big Mardi Gras weekend, there are not only carnival balls and parades, but there’s also the Lunar New Year, Super Bowl Sunday, Lundi Gras, and Mardi Gras, then Valentine’s Day, which is also Ash Wednesday. That’s why it’s ‘go time’ here and at other bakeries in South Mississippi.
Sue also says that Le Bakery will also be doing non-Mardi Gras king cakes for Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, and Easter.
