While many enjoy the familiar, traditional cinnamon king cake, you might need a break and want to try something new while celebrating the Carnival season this year.
Some restaurants and bakeries have put together alternatives to the traditional king cake recipe available during Mardi Gras.
Here's a round-up of king cakes that bend or break the mold of king cakes.
Bagel king cake
Flour Moon Bagels (457 N Dorgenois St.) has taken the savory king cake and put a New York spin to it. People can order a giant bagel in the shape of a king cake filled with smoked salmon, cucumbers, capers and red onion.
Churro king cake
The newly opened Bearcat Baked (726 Julia St.) is now baker Cat Colby-Pariseu's dedicated home base, meaning more of her churro king cakes. This king cake is has ridges of crunch and cinnamon with a soft interior and is perfectly paired with a hot coffee.
Sushi king cake
Sushi lovers can also get in on the king cake action with Rock and Sake's sushi king cake. People in the New Orleans area can pick up the 16-slice sushi creation at the restaurant's Metairie location (2913 Metairie Rd.).
Ice cream king cake
If a cream cheese filling isn't enough for you, several places are serving up ice cream options for king cake lovers.
The local pop-up Rahm Haus Ice Cream will serve up a range of king cake-inspired treats at multiple locations as part of the King Cake Fe(a)st starting Jan. 11 at Courtyard Brewery (1160 Camp St.)
New Orleans Ice Cream Company's king cake ice cream sandwiches will be available with a new look at multiple New Orleans metro area locations this year. The sandwiches are made with king cake ice cream and covered in king cake sprinkle sugar. People can pick them up at Parkway Bakery & Tavern (538 Hagan Ave.), Dab's Bistro (3401 N Hullen St., Metairie), and various Burgersmith locations around Louisiana.
Laozi Ice Cream (4303 Canal St.) has brought back its ice cream flavor dubbed The King, a buttery cinnamon ice cream with sugary king cake bites with butter cream cheese frosting.
Monkey bread king cake
Mae's Bakeshop (3917 Baronne St.) is offering monkey bread king cake kits, including piping bags for icing, edible Mardi Gras beads and bananas foster dipping sauce. Mae's is the first location for Jeremy Fogg, a former pastry chef at Emeril's.
More savory king cakes
While this isn't a new concept, savory king cakes are a good alternative for people who might be avoiding the sweetness of the traditional king cake. A few locations are doing a savory filling to fulfill your king cake needs with less of the sweet flavor.
Bywater Bakery (3624 Dauphine St.) is putting out a crawfish king cake, boudin king cake and spinach and artichoke king cake wrapped in white bread dough smothered in garlic butter and covered in Mardi Gras parmesan cheese.
Chris' Specialty Foods (6251 West End Blvd.) uses sugary dough to wrap some pork boudin.
