BATON ROUGE, La. (WVUE) - ESPN broadcaster Elle Duncan and the College GameDay crew aggressively tore apart a king cake during the LSU-South Carolina pregame show at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center in Baton Rouge.
King cakes are a staple of Mardi Gras festivities. They often contain a small plastic baby and the person who discovers it in their slice is considered lucky and is tasked with getting the next cake.
Sideline report Holly Rowe brought out a king cake for the GameDay panel to sample in an ode to Louisiana’s culture.
Duncan, an Atlanta native, took it upon herself to find the hidden baby in the cake, clawing at it with her fork, leaving little of the colorful dessert intact.
The moment was broadcast on ESPN and has circulated on social media, drawing criticism from Louisianan viewers.
“Everyone associated with this should be jailed,” one fan commented.
“This physically hurt me,” another said.
“This is sacrilegious,” a third fan commented.
“Guys. We had 10 seconds before [commercial] break to find a baby in a cake that wasn’t pre-sliced. Lol. But we tore that thing up later. Had our cake and ate it too!” Duncan posted on X.
