HOWELL — The day before her four-year-old's birthday cake was supposed to be ready at the Howell Walmart, Sarah Lewins received an email that her order had been canceled.
She and her son, William, carefully picked out the special Toy Story cake together from the Walmart website for his birthday party April 16. But the cake decorator called off work, and the order was pulled.
Lewins placed a frantic call to the store, trying to make things right — and into the story entered deli employee Eric Durbin. She thought he was a manager. He called another Walmart and found no one else could make the cake. Durbin has kids of his own, and decided to make it himself.
"When we picked it up it was mostly correct. It was very impressive for what I thought was the manager. My four-year-old loved it, thought it was the best cake ever," Lewins said.
After the party, Lewins wanted to thank the manager who'd helped her. She made a post in "Livingston County Mom Tribe" that received over 500 likes. Durbin's daughter, Bailey, left a comment letting her know he wasn't a manager at all, but a deli employee.
"He's a great guy, great dad. He would do literally anything for anyone, so it definitely shows," Bailey said.

"He's not even a manager," Lewins said. "He had no obligation to fix my problem at 5 o'clock on a Saturday, but he just went so above and beyond and out of his way to make a really bad situation good for a four-year-old."
