Baker Bronwen Wyatt has garnered national attention for her trendsetting, surrealist style of cake-making with Bayou Saint Cake, and now those cakes are about to be even more accessible to her loyal legion of sweet-toothed fans. Wyatt is teaming up with Marigny wine bar and jam shop Bar Pomona to become its “caker-in-residence,” where customers will be able to pick up whole cakes and occasionally grab a slice during pop-ups and slice events. Wyatt and the Bar Pomona team are having a welcome party on Thursday, July 20, where people can buy slices (and order from the regular Bar Pomona menu).
A Margot’s chef is bringing Neapolitan pizza to the West Bank
A chef at Margot’s, the Seventh Ward’s standout pizza place, is leaving in mid-August, the restaurant announced this week. The good news is that Adrian Chelette, who has run the kitchen since Margot’s opened in April 2022 and previously co-owned Ancora, is opening his own pizza joint. Working alongside the owners of popular taco hut Barracuda, he’s taking over six-year-old West Bank pizzeria Tavolino (141 Delaronde Street) for Nighthawk Napoletana, which will fittingly serve Neapolitan-style pizza as at Margot’s. Nighthawk is expected to open this fall.
Bao & Noodle expands to weekday hours
After about a year of only operating on Friday and Saturday, Marigny gem Bao & Noodle has expanded its hours to include weekdays — and it’s open on two of the most difficult days to find open restaurants, Monday and Tuesday. The regional Chinese restaurant from Herbsaint alum Doug Crowell and wife Asia Wong made a splash when it first opened in 2014 with Sichuan and Cantonese specialties, but not long after moving to its current St. Claude Avenue address shut down for two years due to COVID. Its menu of vegan and pork bao, dan dan and biang biang noodles, and seasonal specials is now available for dine-in and takeout Monday, Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday.
Magazine Street gets its own restaurant week
For the first time ever, restaurants on Magazine Street are getting their very own restaurant week, July 17-23. More than 20 restaurants, bars, and coffee shops will offer special prix fixe menus including Baru, Gris-Gris, La Petite Grocery, Osteria Lupo, Saffron, Tito’s Ceviche & Pisco, Apolline, and more. A full list of deals is here.
